The fatal flaw with New Year’s resolutions and most goal-setting, is that we typically bite off more than we can chew. Setting realistic goals seems silly. We should reach for the stars! Get that corner office. Move across the country. Whatever those goals are, we end up disappointed. And that becomes a forgotten resolution by the time February rolls around. I thought about my New year’s list and goals long and hard. I made a few resolutions last year, which were very attainable. In fact, I used to make long lists of goals that I wanted to achieve as well. But I never completed them because they are were too lofty. So I decided four years ago, to take baby steps. ahead are some things to start doing in 2018.

Things you can start doing in 2018

Beginnings can be inspirational. Ahead are 5 realistic goals that anyone can accomplish in a calendar year. Even better, they are also enjoyable and will eventually become so second-nature, you’ll forget they were resolutions. The best part? Each contributes to a happier life and a healthier body and brain.

Take More You Time

We’re guessing you maybe gave a little too much to others this past year and not enough to yourself. Perhaps you were stretched too thin or overextended yourself. That’s OK, it was a time for learning and growing. In the new year, it’s OK to say “no” sometimes. Take a little more time for yourself. Whether it’s for getting organized, taking a solo trip, or just binge-watching your favorite show from your bed, allow yourself some personal space in 2018.

Eat food good for your brain

I listened to a very interesting podcast that mentioned food and the brain. We know that food affects our bodies and moods, but we don’t think how it affects the brain. Well it does. Here is a list of the best brain food some of which may surprise you. Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits to eat. And avocados? Need I say more?

Unplug

You don’t have to break up with technology, but this year, do small things to unplug. Reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and your environment. Don’t charge your phone next to your bed. You could even do a tech-free Sunday each week to truly let go. The world is your iPhone-free oyster. I am better abiding by this when I’m hanging with friends and family, but still need to work on it when I’m alone. It’s so easy to get roped into checking all your apps. I read so many books this year during that downtime, and will continue to read more in the coming year. Also, try meditation! That definitely helped me unplug.

Learn one new thing every month

This could be a new recipe. A new language. A weightlifting class. It truly doesn’t matter as long as its new to you, your brain, and your body. This year I created a bedtime routine. It may sound easy, but it took a while to adjust.

Choose gratitude

One way to inject more joy into your year? Start each day with a gratitude reflection. What are you grateful for? What makes you happy? Focus on the good to improve your mood, and your physical health will follow suit.

I feel quite strongly about this one: you need to stop beating yourself up this year. Do your best in 2018 to give yourself grace, kindness, and patience. Start giving yourself more compliments. Negative self talk gets you nowhere. The more you berate and degrade yourself, the harder your year will be; you’ll also have a much harder time reaching your healthy goals.
