How to style a shawl for spring

Like clockwork each year, spring arrives, and I get furious with my coats. I start to pack up my sweaters to then unpack them again. Just yesterday, I paired a yellow gingham dress with a black leather jacket and boots and pretended it was warm outside. But it snowed instead. The struggle continues as I pull out my pretty dresses. The issue is, dresses feel too sweet to wear right now. The in-between season is complicated. Winter is thawing out as spring slowly arrives. I want my clothes to dress accordingly. A style tip that I took from my work, is to wrap a shawl around whatever you are wearing and it immediately keeps you warm. Shawls are an easy one stop fix for these in between fickle days. I will show you how to style a shawl for spring in the pics below. Throw it over a sweater and a skirt. Pair it in lieu of a wrap or cardigan.

I paired this gorgeous mint green cashmere shawl with accents of bright yellow on my way out the door. Just wearing this scarf with a burst of color on the side really boosts my mood when the weather is blah.

I recently connected with Sonika who handcrafted a tasteful line of soft pashmina shawls that created just this statement piece. When I first met Sonika, I stopped her and asked her where she got her scarf and she told me that she created it on her own. I fell immediately in love as do other strangers on the street always asking her where she got her shawl. Her designs are unique with both bright and muted colors with hand painted motifs and embroideries. The shawls are ageless, and Sonika wanted to create a look for as she puts it the “urban women of any age, with her own sense of style who likes to make a subtle statement.”

When we met again for the second time, I saw her vibrant personality pop out of her shawls, She loves to have fun with colors and wanted to create a happy fusion of her Indian roots infused with her current American lifestyle. In India, the women wear a shawl, which is a wider piece of fabric than just a scarf instead of a wrap.

Wearing something unique and projecting your own signature style, is something we can all relate to. For me, it’s not hot enough throughout the month April to justify the simplicity of skirts and dresses. I have the same problem with frozen yogurt. In the summer, on the most humid of days, I can talk myself through the thought process of considering chocolate-vanilla-swirl to be a full meal. In the chilly parts of spring, however, when the weather feels raw and snows, frozen yogurt doesn’t have the same appeal. It looks more like a headache than a brilliant culinary idea. So having a cup of soup is so much more appealing to me. That is how I feel about her shawls.

The best part for me is when I see someone wearing one of my shawls with any outfit. She loves collaborating with other unique designers.
