Do you have the January blues? January is a time to feed your soul. I have been making some strides in my baby goals for the new year. Thus far, I have made some delicious home-cooked recipes, including these muffins, and have meditated every morning. The motivation is there that is the first step. Getting up early, creating something new, wearing something fresh, all to jump start my creative engines. I feel like I have been in a creative rut the past few weeks and just can’t shake it off. I started the year on a good note, and want to keep it up. When feeling drained and have no idea of where to turn, there are some things you can do. I have learned a few tips along the way. These tips have all been by trial and error. I hope they help you out as well. Stay tuned below for some of my ideas and five tips on how to get out of a creative rut.
Five Tips on How to get out of a Creative Rut
Step away from social media
Go for a hike
Connect with nature. Social media, instagram, and all ways to connect with others are great but sometimes you just need a break or actual real life discussions. I have dedicated one day a week to stay off social media completely. My savior? Getting outdoors to take a walk, or a hike. I always find that getting a good dose of mother nature helps soothe the brain and refuels my energy. There are some places I recommend and hitting the local areas can be a good start. For New Yorkers, the Catskill region has some great unchartered territory. It is worth exploring other options as well. I went to Scribner’s this fall and it was a wonderful weekend escape. I am currently planning my yearly calendar and there are some places I would love to try! Jackson Hole, Wyoming is top on my list to ski and be in nature. Have you ever been?
Read, Read, Read! Sometimes I don’t feel like diving into a lengthy book, so I opt for a magazine instead. Picking up fashion magazines from other countries always offers up some sort of fresh take on the industry. I did read a good book while on vacation, and now I am continuing on that journey.
You wouldn’t be able to tell that I am meditating, but all is takes is some big inhales and exhales to slow down your breathing. Here I am at a coffee shop doing just that. The mediation thing had me struggling for a few weeks. I just didn’t have the time. It is so simple using an app on my phone and you can make the time for 5-10 min. Since I started, I have less of the January blues. And yes, this is me.
Get out of your comfort zone
I am going to attempt to do a few things this year that are leaps above and beyond what I am used to doing. The number one thing on my ind is to introduce myself to somebody new once a week. I tend to do that when I am out at night, but I do want to try it out if the moment arises. That might be tough considering it could be super awkward. I am also considering taking more risks in my career and putting myself out there. I don’t want to fight it. There will be a rough period I am sure, but the beauty is on the other side of the tunnel.
Organize your closet
It’s a daunting task, and one that we’ve all admittedly put off for seasons at a time, but January is the time to finally face the fear all fashionistas have, organize your closet. Wouldn’t it be great to walk into your closet and find the exact thing you’re looking for upon the first search? Even the most intense sorting projects are imaginable. I can take your closet from messy to topnotch with my magic touch. The key is to get rid of stuff you haven’t worn in over a year. And eco-friendly storage bins, shoe boxes, velvet hangers, and a stylist, promise the tidy closet of your dreams.
