Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia, the couple behind their little over two year old contemporary brand, Sachin and Babi, made a splash this season by showing a runway presentation at Cedar Lake Dance Studio on 26th Street. I had first seen the collection at the Coterie a month ago, but I was so happy to have been invited to their first show ever. I also got a chance to go backstage and photograph the hair and makeup looks pre-show and see what the models do backstage. As you can see, they are on their phones like the rest of us, probably tweeting away.
The collection rendered a sexy beat with slits up the thigh, flirty flared leather skirts, and plenty of sheer. The color palette consisted of navy, black, deep purple, and emerald greens. Their inspiration came from a thought, an idea, “How would a love child of Jim Morrison and Kate Beckinsale dress?” Plenty of leather, but done up in a feminine way, like pleated chiffon combined with leather looks. Revved-up with a new refined direction, I can see a S & B gown on a number of celebrities walking down the red carpet. And I can see myself in many of theses pieces come fall. If you could pick one piece for autumn, which one would it be? Decisions, decisions, decisions.
