Spring renewal

The promise of warmer weather and longer days has put some spring in my step. With daylight savings comes the extra hour of sun, a chance to renew, regroup, and refresh our wardrobes. It is still only Mid-March on the calendar, so the weather can be fickle like it was this week–with degrees way into the 60’s and back down to the low 40’s. I find that choosing pops of color, and prints like florals, will always brighten my day. Like I’ve said before it is always smart to layer and work your winter pieces with the new spring garb for those awkward days when you are not sure what to wear. Everybody faces that challenge in the mornings. Here I have paired a crisp... Read More

My haul from Marni for H&M

Yesterday was the Marni for H&M launch and it seemed like forever and a day ago since I originally posted this back in January stating how excited I was to wait on line for 4 hours and shop another designer collaboration with a mass retailer. But this one was different. I have always been a fan of Marni’s quirky and offbeat stuff ever since I can remember. My love affair started with her big chunky necklaces and bracelets but the problem for me was always the steep prices. I just couldn’t justify spending over $800 on a resin necklace tied together with ribbon that I felt I could make myself. The sale went live at some H&M locations at 8am with shoppers given wristbands once... Read More

Alexander McQueen

Sarah Burton showed her latest collection for McQueen in Paris and what a powerful enchanting show it was. It looked like an explosion of pink and white cotton candy. Or petals made of organza and feather if you will. Ms. Burton’s theme, “A beautiful future” was translated into a show that was a mix between school girl, and Snow Queen. She opened with cream wool jacquard coatdresses with bell-shape skirts and frothy Mongolian lamb collars.  At the halfway point, the shapes began to grow—it was as though an invisible string had been pulled. There were detachable fur neck pieces paired with embroidered, powder pink leather dresses with curved, oversized shoulders, calf-long sleeves, and UGG-like boots. It was outrageous. As for outerwear, Snow Man-like coats were worn with large... Read More

Isabel Marant

Leave it to fashion’s darling and pioneer Isabel Marant to transform her entire collection to the Wild Wild West and head to Paris…Texas. Yoked cowboy shirts, lace prairie blouses, leather goucho pants– that’s right gouchos, and suede booties slide into an effortless covetable collection. What a sweet french take on cowboy. Some of my favorites consisted of strong items like the lace on cropped crew necks, and sexy leather dresses. Her signature cropped jeans now come in leather with fringe detail. There will be a waiting list for these come August. I love the low slung hip belts and the shoes. The pointy toes, the cowboy stitching. I should have been a shoe blogger. More on that another time.  photos: Talkshoes.com, hey crazy Watch the video... Read More

Stella McCartney FW 2012

From the looks of it, Stella McCartney held one of her best presentations ever this morning in Paris, as the most important shows of the season got underway. Elegant, wearable, and luxe are the adjectives I would use to describe the collection. Both smart and sporty, Stella really knows how to strike that balance and dress a lady, for the crazy busy lifestyle women have today. There were plenty of oversized coats in shots of electric blue and pink, flipped out skirts, and larger than life handbags. McCartney muse Natalia Vodianova opened and closed the show in high collars which reoccurred throughout. Among the stars were the exaggerated hourglass dresses, and the streamlined silhouettes that she does so well in spongy fabrics and trompe l’oeil leaves.  Typical... Read More

From Milan Part 2

As I mentioned yesterday, I am finishing my roundup of the shows in Milan with Dolce and Gabbana, Jil Sander, and my favorite of the lot, Prada. Just to put the timing of all this into perspective, as I write this I am also watching  jeweled toned dresses pop-up on my screen from the Lanvin show in Paris, and anticipating the Akris, Celine, and Loewe shows later on today.  A bit late to the party, but better now that never. Typing, viewing and  dissecting the shows on my glaring blue screen while slugging down a big mug of java. Consider my ideas and have a look. Ornate and fanciful infused with shots of theater and grandeur were the somewhat familiar messages for Dolce and Gabbana‘s... Read More

Milan FW 2012 shows

Milan has come and gone but after many scrupulous hours hunting down the latest, I have come up with some of my favorites. Today’s focus is all names ending in the letter “i” — tomorrow I move onto other vowels. Starting off with Gucci, the romance quotient has returned in Frida Giannini’s collection charming the seductive, rather than sweet variety. A dark moody palette with dramatic brocades and jacquards, there was a massive amount of fur, silk, and leather. Rendering similarities to the language of YSL, there were plenty of capes, boxy structured jackets, velvet trenches, and knitted minks. Although dark and opulent, this collection was definitely on my radar. From Gucci to Fendi, we see a continuation of  the dance, according to the show... Read More

Looking down at the southern regions

If recent photos and fall reports serve as an indication of anything, it is that trends constantly reboot themselves and become new again. This is really nothing new in the worlds of fashion, food, art, and pretty much everything. If you have been following my posts and reports from New York, London, and Milan, experimental menswear, i.e. librarian chic has returned from all angles. The whole masculine-feminine tension, you know the ones that all the designers try with menswear-inspired separates, can sometimes work and sometimes flop. Derek Lam’s show which had a 60’s vibe that would make “Mad Men” jealous, was fantastic right down to the bouffant hairdos. Head below the ankles, for a minute . I am currently vibing on these gold cap-toe metallic oxfords shown by Lam... Read More
